IT / Di cosa parla un film muto?

EN /What is a silent film about? And: is it really silent? Are we really sure that somebody noticed that sound was missing before the introduction of the sound films? It could be a resounding denial. Would anybody dare to say that a poem is a blind illustration after the art of drawing was established? And be careful, because it can also be the other way around. According to this privative logic what would the 4’33” by John Cage be? Silence, to distinguish it from the music played till that moment? Maybe. But the drama is all there already (both for music and films): in the pianist that gets on the stage, sits down on the piano seat letting his tails hanging behind him, puts his glasses on and opens the score, measuring every movement and loading it with expectations, with the pathos of the never coming resolution. This silent music is not lacking in anything. So who can say that the films with Chaplin, Griffith, Ejzenstein are lacking in something? The only true answer could be a silent and embarrassed reflection.
