A voi giudicare.

EN / Is it correct to take a statement made in fifteen seconds and use it as a starting point for illustrations that were clearly composed and then carried out? It can be, if we accept that for instance the Charlie Parker’s solos have been recorded, transcribed, studied and broken down to create a new language which is suitable to extemporize but also to compose. But music improvisation is not just jazz. Once, a long time ago, people improvised in the Indian ragas, in the baroque music; organists were great improviser since 1500. They had very strict rules but still they used to improvise. Improvisation cannot be improvised. Any language needs to be interiorized, rebuilt, metabolized and spat out after a personal revision. If you explore the field of non-idiomatic improvisation, far from any genre, like Derek Bailey and his followers, you will see a further step in the search for a way out from any language, which takes to a free improvisation. Can an illustration communicate all of this? The answer may be ‘yes’ or it may be ‘no’. Or even ‘much more’. It is up to you to judge.
